In American culture we are taught that culture encompasses celebrations, holidays, food, and dress etc. Culture is a means to the end. The end result is to connect with loved ones and express appreciation for those aspects that make ones culture unique. On the contrary, in African centered consciousness we understand that culture is an individual’s understanding of the natural laws. Dance, drumming, and rituals are merely the tools used to teach the culture to myself so that I  learn the rich and powerful way of life of my ancestors, the forces of nature, the cosmos–how they work, and ultiamtely how I should benefit from them. A by product of the dance, drumming, and ritual is the connection with my brothers and sisters and celebration of family. Inspired by Professor James Small
