Does it Really Matter?

EVAN DENNIS

The things that matter most must never be at the mercy of the things that matter least.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The current circumstances surrounding the global civil unrest we are experiencing and the muzzling of COVID-19 have not been welcomed events. However, in spite of these intrusive forces, their disruption has granted us the blessings of engaging in long, overdue, and honest disclosure. Members of our society are courageously pressing relentlessly against thick walls of separation and injustice with efforts that move us toward unity. And, the marketplace shut downs and stay at home orders of COVID-19 have caused us to be with ourselves whether we wanted to or not. It is my hope that more of us have taken advantage of our alone time.  We can only avoid being with ourselves for so long.

The year of 2020 will always be remembered but how will you remember it? The impetus for the protests and the sickness and suffering of loved ones have left deep indelible imprints in our hearts. Will you remember the tragedies and losses of 2020 most? Or will you remember the good that came out of 2020 because of the unfortunate conditions? What will your testimony be in the future when you look back at this year?

There is a sliver-lining in every dark cloud but we have to be willing to look for it with eyes of hope.  Greater purpose is revealed through pain if we can perceive it a midst the discomfort.  My hope is that we will allow this societal purging to bring us to a greater sense of clarity.

People typically learn to appreciate calm in the midst of adversity and gratitude seems most sincere once we have reclaimed whatever we had taken for granted. What would happen if we decided not to wait until moments of crisis, trauma, or death to focus on what really matters most? What would happen if we made the conscious decision to live our lives with the intention of focusing on what matters most? Too often we are distracted by the amenities of life, and busyness and procrastination seem to go hand in hand.

Recently, I was reminded that fear, ego-obsessions, and unchecked emotions are a horrible combination that can easily keep us away from what matters most. When we’re afraid we must consciously step outside of ourselves, become the observer and remember that the fear isn’t real. Fear comes from our perceptions based on limiting beliefs. The intense emotions that accompany fear make fear seem real but the emotions are signals to alert us of our response to what’s going on. We control the emotions is should not be the other way around. Our ego tries to protect us but when it demands its way or insists on being right or heard we’re probably missing what matters most.

So, a lesson I’m learning in 2020 is that personal surrender in the answer! Surrender, is not a weakness in this sense but a strength. For strong-willed people like me finding peace with surrender may not feel an easy task but the key to follow-through is simply a change in perception.

In moments of fear, ego-obsession and unchecked emotion from myself or others, I can surrender to my divine essence–the godliness within me. Then I am not limited by my humanness. I will be able to see past the fog of the situation. I can respond with calm and awareness. I can be my most authentic self and the greater part of me has an opportunity to rise to the occasion. When there is no struggle about what’s minor or trivial, I can seize the moment to be a part of what matters most and so can others around me. Surrender is not a one-time event. Surrender is a lifestyle.

Something amazing happens when we surrender and just love. We melt into another world, a realm of power already within us. The world changes when we change. the world softens when we soften. The world loves us when we choose to love the world.”

Who has the Courage to Evolve?

Stanislav Kondratiev

People who spend their lives making other people happy at the expense of their own happiness are some of the unhappiest people in the world.

Dr. Free

As we spend time with our family and ourselves during this quarantine, we have a choice to make. Either we can fight against the impetus and be reluctant to change or we can surrender to the moment that is tugging on our hearts and begin the process of personal change.

Perspective is everything! How we choose to look at this time of separation has the potential to build us up and make us better or break us down in fear and despair. Whatever we allow will prevail. Yes, there is loss, sickness, restriction, fear, and reports of death all around us. The media has incessant reports of all of the negativity that our world is experiencing. Many of us are faced with circumstances that we never imagined possible. Nonetheless, the good news in the midst of it all is that the circumstances never handcuff our power to choose.

Our power to choose should not be taken lightly. We have the power to choose how we feel, what we think, and the actions we take.  Circumstances do not choose our feelings, every feeling we experience is our choice. Our minds do not have to run rampantly unchecked and unrestrained by focusing on thoughts that feed fear and despair. The power of our mind is within our own control. This is a prime time, not to cower and do nothing, but a time to take inspired action to do those things that you alone know are necessary. A measure of our truest selves wants to come forth in spite of this pandemic. The present situation is not meant to destroy us as a society. We can emerge better, stronger, and wiser! The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. That awesome measure in you deserves to be seen.

Today it is very easy to find something to complain about. It is very easy to find a crowd of naysayers. The bandwagon is filled with people who have a valid checklist about the horrible things that they have experienced thus far in 2020. What would happen if we turned that energy inward and committed to doing our inner work? Who has the courage to see things differently? Who has the courage to say because of the affliction of 2020 I can now see things more clearly? Who can say the year 2020 has moved me to reorder my priorities, express more gratitude, face the things that I had been running from, and better appreciate what I had taken for granted?

This is your time to rise and shine–not as some may think with popularity or fame but to be more authentically you! This is a time to be true to yourself! This is a time, to be honest with yourself! This is a time to ask yourself the hard questions and answer them honestly without pretense. Now is the time to be courageous enough to take a personal inventory of your own life.

Take the courage to evolve—to be unapologetically you. No, it’s not easy being authentic when we have not been ourselves for so long but it’s is possible to be authentic—authenticity is our life’s purpose. Danger is real but fear is imagined. The presence of fear necessitates the ripe opportunity for us to be courageous. In other words, if fear is there, courage is also present. We just have to choose courage.

The authentic you may make a lot of people uncomfortable. Evolve anyway! Discover yourself! Follow your intuition. Don’t just accept the opinions of others about who you should be, how you should feel, think, or what you should do at this pivotal time in your life. No one else can be you but you! You are not powerless. The authentic you is more than enough—gifted, creative, unique, capable, and well able to complete your journey with your definition of personal success. Affirm yourself and feel good about the person you were created to be.  Get excited about being you which is the only way to live your best life. Be courageous enough to allow yourself to evolve. The world is waiting to receive the gift of YOU!

The Authenticity of Predilections Part 1

“A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are.” Unknown

I recently reconnected with a dear friend. As life goes, we lost contact a few years back but we have reconnected via Facebook and have recently spoken by phone. When I heard her voice on the phone I was immediately reminded of the laughter, good times, and the great conversations we had shared in the past. I’m not sure if she knows it but she is an important person in my awakening experience. At a defining moment in my journey she was able to answer questions for me that were significant to the trajectory of my ascension process. Without judgment she gladly shared anecdotally without growing weary. This was a big deal because I can be extremely curious. To this day, she respectfully honors the transformation of my process by always addressing me by the name I adopted for myself to mark the moment—Free.

It wasn’t until we spoke recently that I realized what it is that I love about my friend. I had not evolved enough personally to ascertain from my experiences how to clearly articulate how I feel. Now I know for certain there are three main reasons I can celebrate her. First, she doesn’t judge me. She interacts with me unconditionally. Secondly, she lives life on her own terms unapologetically with a joy and vibrancy that is contagious. Because of her energy and self- acceptance, I’ve always felt good, and at ease when in her company. Finally, she is absolutely authentic! She desires to be no one but herself. Oh– and for sure, my dear friend enjoys living the life that she has created for herself to the fullest as a mom of two, a five-time college graduate, veteran, educator, motorcyclist, and bisexual who is presently in an open relationship.

I honor her couage and tenacity to make choices that define her success. In that regard we have a lot in common. I personally identify as a heterosexual female but I respect her freedom to choose according to her own preferences. I respect others freedom to do so as well. Private life is just that–private and it’s no one else’s business. As authentic individuals we should always make choices that are in line with our own core values and personal truths.

Moreover, as I spoke with my friend, I shared with her that I do want to understand more about the lifestyle and challenges of the LGBTQ community and communicate that understanding to others so that I can be part of the solutions and not problems. The inclusive mission of Stillness Hub is to help all people to improve the quality of their lives by becoming mindfully authentic.  Mindfulness and authenticity are essential factors for becoming the best version of ourselves and for living our best life.

My friend has agreed to share once again so that I can gain insight and appreciate her path more deeply. I realize that it is my responsibility to generate love and understanding rather than hate or fear due to ignorance. I must focus on what unites us instead of what divides us. Each of us is someone’s daughter or son, brother or sister, mother or father and worthy of love. Regardless of what we would like to believe the truth is we are not separate. We are all connected. In fact, everything we do affects the collective consciousness of the entire universe.

It does not matter what our own personal preferences are. They don’t define or dictate the personal predilections of others. When people choose to live differently than I do. I do not think I have the right to impose my values upon them. Hopefully I will get back what I put out into the world. I expect the same respect in return. Choice does not grant a license to cause harm to others, but choice does allow us to exercise our desires as human-beings.  This means considering how we choose to be in the physical form and as a spiritual being having a human experience. We do not have to like each other’s choices but we are much better off when we respect them. As individuals we have the right to live as we choose to.

I am an advocate for freedom for everyone. Freedom is our birthright. Further, when I protect the rights of others, I also protect myself. The more honest we all are about the lifestyle we choose–whatever it is, the more personal freedom we can experience. We can’t give away what we don’t first possess ourselves. In other words, once we learn to enjoy our own personal freedom, we can grant others the space to be free as well. I am looking forward to what I will gain from my future conversations with my friend. This is the first in a series of blogs. We should all desire to live as authentically as she does.
